The Modernist era was an era of boldness and fast-paced living. The culture saw the Harlem Renaissance and the Roaring Twenties (also known as the Jazz Age). There are many definitions of modernism in literature out there. The most basic aim of modernism is to consciously break away from classical and traditional forms. Modernism in literature and the arts became popular in Western societies in the late nineteenth century through the early twentieth century, following WWI and the rapid growth of cities.
Traditions that had been in place were broken as the definition of art shifted to include anything, because art was subjective. Modernism deliberately broke with tradition from the past.
